I can only relate what has been explained to me. I've suffered from depression for quite some time, and have had experiences with a few SSRI's.(selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) These days the trend is towards affecting more than just serotonin levels.
Effexor XR is my current med. Prozac lost it's effectiveness for me during an extended period of high stress levels. Prozac basically targets serotonin levels alone.
Effexor addresses serotonin levels, but adds to that effect with also targeting norepinephrine and dopamine levels. They both help by keeping moods more stable, someone without depression might consider them happy pills as they would get a lift from them. All I get is stablized, but thats all I need from them.
They help me deal with sudden stress by slowing down my depressive reactions. Maybe not the best way to deal with depression, but I'd fall into depressive episodes much easier and more often with out them.

Just in case you are genuinely suffering from depression, the two following websites will provide you with all the information you need. Oddly, one of them uses your exact wording! "neurotransmitters norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine"
