At 4 weeks the puppy should still be nursing a bit. It should have started some mushy puppy food at 3 weeks along with the introduction of water.
Ideally you will achieve weaning at 7 weeks old and the puppy will be on puppy food all the time now.
But this is when the socializing skills are learned.
Puppies need to stay with their moms at least until 8 weeks to 10 weeks old. Never at 6 weeks.

8 weeks is plenty, for the smallest breeds maybe a little sooner.By then, most Mom's have tired of the little guy's anyway and her nursing/weaning has pretty well stopped.Of course this is a general answer. Taking away from Mom before that is detrimental to the puppy, both physically and mentally.
Training at this time is tough because of the fragile mental capacity, but physical/mental attachment to you at this time is great. You need to be there for him at least 4 times a day for feeding, defecation and urination,as well as a little exercise and "fun-time".

8 weeks is the minimum age that a puppy can leave the litter for a new home. Even tho they can eat solid foods, they still learn much from mom in that time after they are weaned.
Personally, I asked my American Eskimo breeder to keep her until 10 weeks, as I wanted her to have a little more time with mom and litter before I brought her home.

I agree with everyone else..Usually the age of seperating a pup from their mother is between 6-8 weeks of age. I got my puppy at 8 weeks and we bonded instantly. Good Luck!

I don't think you should separate it until at least 8 wks. old. I raise chihuahuas and have found that if they are left with the mother at least 8 wks, the puppy will do alot better.
