I was attacked by a pit bull when I was six. After this happened I was so afraid of dogs I wouldn't go near any dogs. Then when I was 18 a friend of mine had a Jack Russell. It was the sweetest dog I had ever been around. It didn't jump on me or anything it would lay on my lap and bring me it's ball and want to play. I got close to her dog. When I got my own apartment about a year later I got a Jack Russell. She was so easy to housebreak and she was very easy going but she was very hyper. I would walk her about 2 miles everyday. When she was about two I was living in a very small apartment and working a lot of hours and it wasn't fair to her so I found a lady that did a Jack Russell rescue and I turned her over to her and she found a wonderful retired couple to take her. It broke my heart to give her up but it was best for her. I thought about getting a dog about 3 years later and I was trying to decide on the best breed and I went to look at some puppies and saw an almost all white Jack Russell. She was so friendly and she looked to be about 2 years old. So I bought her and she is the best dog. She is almost five now and she isn't really hyper. As for me I love Jack Russells. If you get one from a good breeder some aren't as hyper. A lot of my friends have jacks and they love them. All the jacks that I have been around are very friendly and easy going. But some are hyper and almost all are stubborn. If I was to ever get another dog it would be a jack russell.

I am the proud owner of a Jack Russell, one of the best breeds in my opinion. But anyway, they can get up to 15inches in height and can weigh up to about 16lbs. They are a small, well muscled compact dog. They are very head strong, and always try to be the dominant one. DO NOT be fooled by their small size, they have the personality of a big dog. They are extremely intelligent, they need a large amount of exercise to burn off all of their tremendous energy. Believe me when i say they will try to outsmart you in almost every way imaginable. They need an outlet for their energy, and if you didn't already know, they are a hunting dog, they were, and are still used for varmint/rodent hunting (squirrels, rabbits, you name it they will probably go after it) So you may want to take this into consideration when thinking about getting a JRT. I don't want to scare you away from the breed by any means, but I am just informing you, so that it will help you in your decision in getting a JRT. They are first and foremost a TERRIER (or terror as we terrier owners sometimes call them) I found out about my JRT the hard way, please do some research on Jack Russell Terriers before you get one and if you can handle their personality and accommodate for their needs I say all the more power to you, they will be a challege, but they are the best companion you will ever have. As someone else said, they are first and foremost, TERRIERS. They were bred to chase foxes and other small animals and corner them in holes until the hunter could get to the animal. They were also bred to be able to keep up with the hunters and the horses all day, which is why they have so much energy. The biggest I have seen was about 27 pounds. (I have a Jack, about 21 pounds, and am a member of several groups for Jack owners.) As for their personalities, they are generally extremely hyper and require a lot of exercise and attention. They are also extremely loyal and intelligent. I had absolutely no problem potty-training mine, and training him to sit, stay, etc. I would never let him off his leash outside a fenced yard though, b/c if they see a squirrel or rabbit or something, they can become so focused on chasing that animal that they do not hear you calling. As much trouble as he gets into (he chews EVERYTHING, no matter how much I try to train him not to), I would not trade mine for anything.

At the most they will be about 15lbs. I have a Jack Russell Terrier that is 2 years old and according to my vet she will most liekyl live to be around 21. If you don't have the time to play with or walk a dog or you don't have a backyard I don't reccomend a jack russell. Be prepared for a very hyper very stubborn dog. They are very hard to potty train so you need to be patient.

Jack Russells tend to be one way or another, either regular characters, or like the one I have, hyperactive, jealous, constant go, go, go. He is
five and still has accidents because he gets so excited he can't hold his urine. If you get a Jack Russell, make sure you see the parents and note their behavior. JRTs may be small dogs, but they don't know it. Mine tried to take on a Pit Bull. They are not a good first dog.

Jack Russells don't get that big no more than 2 and a half feet standing on their hind legs. But I swear they can jump 9 feet into the air. They are VERY hyper. If you want to get one you need lots of patience.

Ediie, on "Frasier" was a Jack Russell, if that gives you any idea how big they get, physically.
From an attitude standpoint, Jack Russells are about 200# of solid muscle, and that's they way they picture themselves!

They are terriers and that means that they require a HUGE amount of excercise and entertainment. You will find that the terrier breeds also have varying attitudes. You will need to have a lot of patience with the Jack's as they are very bouncy.
