I think the smoking ban is BS. Its just like everything else the government is doing. No you can't bust your own kids as* anymore unless you want to go to jail, you can't smoke in public places, and the list goes own. What is freedom anymore, The list is getting shorter daily. Next it will be our firearms then freedom of speech. Instead of raising tobacco taxes how about alcohol look at how many people innocent families get killed daily by drunk drivers. People that are making these new smoking laws have to much time on there damn hands.

I live in Ohio as well, I voted for issue 5 and am a strong advocate of it. No, it may not be fair for people who do smoke but in the same breath it is not fair to non smokers to breath in second hand smoke. I grew up in a home where both parents and my sister smoked (i am a nonsmoker) All I can remember is the house filled with smoke and wanting to gag all the time from the smell. I get real bad headaches from the second hand smoke and hate eating in restaurants with that smell. Yes, there is a separate section for smokers and non smokers but have you ever noticed that there is no barrier to stop the smoke? Sometimes the sections are right next to each other. Same situation in bars. Going out i have to leave early because my eyes begin to burn and i get sick. All in all, i am sorry that you have to be told that you are not allowed to smoke-there could have been a better solution but this law is the closest anyone has come in years. By the way, Ohio has a 1-800 number that they call the Tobacco Quit Line that helps guide smokers to quitting. If you have medical insurance many of the patches, gums, and other forms of treatment are now covered. Look into it if you are serious about wanting to kick the habit.

I just moved out of Cleveland Ohio 4 months ago.As I smoker I had to pay sin taxes. It was for the Jacobs field to be built and a few other things.Oddly enough when I bought a pack of cigarettes They was glad to tax me extra for that stadium but there is no smoking in Jacobs field at.Um...WTF is that about? But I kind of like the idea of no smoking in public places because my almost 2 year old has severe asthma. There was places in Ohio that I could not take him to because of smoking in public buildings.I was happy when they made Cleveland Clinic and Metro Hospital on West 25th a smoke free campus.Hard to take a young child to see the doctors while hes having a asthma attack and people gathered around the doors to the clinics blowing smoke towards our way.I am a smoker but if they made it the law not to smoke in public then I say too sad for me but my lil one has just won a victory.Live in Texas now. Some smoke free places here too.

You asked for honesty, I'll give it to you. It is very considerate of you to not smoke around your non-smoking friends. HOWEVER, most people do NOT care! I have had many friends who smoke, and one who had the nerve to light up in front of me 5 min after I told her I was pregnant! Lost many a friendship that way. Also, I think non-smokers should have a right to go to a bar, or restraunt and not have to worry about second hand smoke. Even passive smoke 2 or 3 times a week increase your risks for cancer, asthma, etc. Why is it illegal to drink and drive my friend? Because it endagers others LIVES! So does second-hand smoke! Yes, you should be able to smoke but not to the extent to where you expose others to your harmful chemicals. I'm afraid to even take my kids bowling for fear we'll get stuck next to a bunch of inconsiderate smokers. I agree with you that being told what you can and can't do sucks, but you need to realize that not everyone is as polite as you are so the laws are needed to be enforced to ensure the safety of the rest of society.
P.S. I have to do a report on smoking and smoking issues for my college course written communications. If ou are willing to take a survey, or just to discuss the issue pros/cons/ I'd really appreciate it. We could do it through chat rooms or via e-mail. If you're willing e-mail me please.

Hey. I'm a non-smoker and I think that if you want to kill yourself with tobacco, then go ahead. I am from Ohio and voted against that particular issue. I was much more in favor of issue 4 which banned smoking in "most" public places. For the life of me I can't see what is wrong with smoking in a bar. I personally don't want to wade through a ton of smoke when going to a restaurant but if they can have a smoking section that is actually separate from the rest of the establishment, then why not let them have it? Not Ohio's wisest move but then again we (not me by the way) were responsible for putting GW in for the 2nd term.

There all kinds of pills, patches and clinics. Don't give up you can do it. I quit when I started getting bad headaches. I told a friend, he said I'll begin thinking that smoking gives me a headace. Sure enough it worked. And then he too was able to quit because he didn't want the bad headaches.
Maybe you can try something like that. There is a strong mind-body connection in us all.

I also have the right not to breathe your cancer and heart disease causing second hand smoke when you are out in a public place. I have incurable lung damage, and a permanent disablity due to my father smoking while I was growing up. I had no say so in the matter then, so the government got involved to protect people like myself from people like you. I have been unable to go into places because of smokers like you that think you have the right to smoke.
And for the Nimrod who says his almost 2 year old son has asthma, have you not connected the dots yet? You are the cause of it.

You are a perfect example of why that law has been passed. I smoke also but I do respect the fact that hopefully, in the future, there will not be people like us that become sick from it. I am sure that you have kids and grandkids that you would not want them to smoke so be supportive of the law. We can't always help what we have done to ourselves but we can possibly try to prevent others from the diseases that come with smoking. I truly wish you the best for your health.

I think its high time that you quit. However, it should be gradual & not abrupt stop since there are withdrawal symptoms in some cases.
With all the diseases you had enumerated, you are still lucky not having COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease due to chronic smoking.
Better consult your pulmonologist with regards to the use of Nicotine patch.

You definately have the right to smoke, just not in public places. You are hurting others. What if I stood next to you and spit into the air constantly, and the spray was falling on you? Its my right to spit into the air is it not? Spit doenst give you cancer though..... My aunt is smoking herself to death, and she has that right, but not the right to make others inhale that crap. Sorry that you are addicted. Try to get hypnotized, it worked for my mom and didnt for my grandmother and they went together....you never know what will work.
