The main options for this are Pattaya, Hua Hin, Cha-am, Ko Samet and, to a lesser extent, Ko Chang.
Pattaya is a very developed beach resort only a couple of hours from Bangkok, but the beach itself is only average at best by Thai standards. Come here for a vibrant nightlife scene, but it's best to look elsewhere for decent beaches.
Ko Samet has very nice beaches, but gets very busy and much more expensive at weekends, Thai public holidays and during the tourist high season - book ahead if you can. The main beach, Diamond beach, caters mainly to rich Thai tourists and is very developed. The beach has also been a bit spoiled by the dirt and pollution that this has caused. Other beaches are much quieter, cheaper and more remote. Facilities can be basic, and generally accommodation and food are overpriced all over the islands. On the plus side some of the beaches are very beautiful, right up amongst Thailand's best. Ko Samet is a national park and, in line with national policy, charges an entrance fee of 200B per person for foreigners, 20B for Thais.
Hua hin is pretty low-key and with only a so-so beach. The accommodation here is good value, and it's a very good place for seafood. Horse rides are popular on the beach, and it can be a bit of hassle to get the owners to leave you alone if you don't want one. There's not much else to do round here, and most of the tourists are either Thai or elderly Europeans. Nearby Prachuap Khiri Khan and Cha-am are mainly beach resort for Thai tourists with foreigners relatively thin on the ground - they're cheap, but with only mediocre beaches and not to much to do. Depending on your attitude, they can be a nice getaway from Bangkok or they can be downright boring.
Ko Chang is probably the best choice, as the beaches and scenery are both very good, not overdeveloped and not overpriced like Ko Samet. The biggest problem is that it's not so easy to reach in a quick break from Bangkok, being a trip of several hours.

There is no beach in bangkok. However in Thailand, you can find plenty!
The better known places for beach resorts are located south and east of Bangkok. For example, out east in the province of Trat, there is the islands of Koh Chang and Kok Kood. These are popular with the locals, you get more privacy as it is a bit off the tourist route. Place has beautiful waters though though the beaches are not comparable to the south.
Just southeast of Bangkok is Pattaya. Known more for its night life than its beach. The beach is just so-so. Good if you are lookig for fun and seafood.
Further south is Hua Hin. A more quiet place, it has good water and great beaches along the coast. This is why the Thai Royal Family has a beach resort there. You get good clean beach, great water and great seafood, at a lower price as this place is still favoured by locals more than tourists. You can get quite good privacy at a low price.
Much further south, on the east is the island resorts of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. These are more popular for full-moon parties especially over weekends.
To the west is the Phuket. Krabi and Phang-nga provinces where the best beaches are. Plenty if you include the many islands located within the local. What stike me is the white beaches and clear water that you get there. Simply beautiful. Phuket is the more touristy one, but you can easily avoid the crowd by taking off to one of themany beach or island resorts around the place.
It is relatively easy for you to pick the place you want to stay and look for accommodation. If you avoid peak season like Christmas/New Year when the locals also go holidaying.
Look up www.tourismthailand.org for more info on these places, and what you can do there.
Check www.asiarooms.com for accommodations, you can read reviews and check the rates online too. And book if you want to online too.
Let me know if I can be of further service to you. You can contact me at tongbn@yahoo.co.uk if you want to.

The nearest beaches to Bangkok are on the East coast more or less south of Bangkok. The most famous one is Pattaya in Chonburi Province. Bangkok is not on the coast but on a river.
There may be river beaches between the city and the coast but swimming in the river water after it has passed through the greater Bangkok area would not be recommended!

There is no beaches in Bangkok. But the beaches in Thailand that I love most are Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Phuket and Pang Nga.
I recommend these 4 beaches and make sure if you're going to Phuket, you have to go to Koh Similan.
By the way beach in thai is 'Ta lay'
and Island is 'Koh'
Have fun!!
=)
