He didn't wake up one day as Prophet, but rather worked his way up through the ranks. He was a very diligent and hard working leader, and he still is to this day. I'd go so far as to say he is an exceptional leader...but I don't think he's a prophet. I think he truly believes he is, though.

He is the prophet of God today, but it is obvious you know little about the selection process. Normally, the senior apostle in the Quorum of the Twelve becomes the new prophet upon the death of the occupying one.
But this process is done through revelation and much prayer. President Hinckley has the gift of prophesy, but there are more important functions of the prophet. One huge milestone he made is the building and dedicating of over 80 temples all over the world. We have now about 125 temples to do the Lord's work.

Yes, he IS a prophet. No he didnt wake up. He was called by the Lord. Not as in the way other preachers say they are called. This is done thru the Preisthood and if you want to know what he has prophesied go to www.lds.org OR you can call the LDS missionaries.
I can tell you if you really wanna know, its a matter of study and prayer and you can find out for yourself. Dont be shy in seeking someone from the church to answer your questions.
I am a convert, the church IS true.

I am guessing your question is motivated by bitterness of some sort. I have seen it many times.
If I am wrong on this point I hope you will forgive me.
If your source is lds.org then why do you ask this question?
I solemly proclaim that the man, Gordon B. Hinckley was called of God to be a prophet as was Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Joseph Smith(I'll bet that smarts) and all others since who were called of God as was Aaron(old testament) by proper authority and not of self delusion or aggrandizement but to bear witness to the world that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God sent to save all mankind from the bonds of mortal death through his resurrection and from spiritual death for all who would have faith on Jesus Christ and keep his commandments.
This is their message and what they prophesy of is the consequences of living a life contrary to the teachings of God through his son and his prophets and the consequences of living a life that is in harmony with said teachings.
This is their message.
And now it is your choice to listen, learn for yourself if it is true or not by asking God with real intent, and to obey and have an abundant and happy life or to go contrary to the message of these prophets and live a life that will always be unsatisfactory and unhappy.
What goes around comes around.
You will reap what you sow.
I hope you get the idea.
If not your heart is hardened and you will refuse to listen to the gentle and sure voice of the Spirit of God which testifies of all truth and cannot lie.
I have found all of these things to be true of my own volition and not because I was compelled, actually, in a way I was compelled. My life was miserable because I wasn't listening to the Prophet and keeping the commandments. The unhappiness came from inside of me and I was enjoying the misery that accompanies living a life of evil of not listening to what the prophet has to say. I was compelled by my own misery.
And now I have this to say"Praise to the Man who communed with Jehovah!"
Thanks be to God that He has sent a prophet to guide us today!

One cannot hear him speak, see a picture of him, or especially be in his presence without firmly knowing he is a true prophet of the Lord. I know he speaks with God, I know he receives Revelation and instruction on how the Lord's church should be run.
Every time he speaks to the church, it is prophecy. Prophecy is not necessarily saying "OK in 5 years this will happen"... he is speaking from the Lord so everything he says concerning the church is prophecy. Every time he announces a new temple, that is a Revelation and prophecy, every time he councils us to be more neighborly, that is direct Revelation and prophecy.

To prophesy means to speak the devine will of God.
Gordon B. Hinckley has prophesied to the world that it is the devine will of God for every person to have faith in Jesus the Christ, repent, be baptized and recieve the Holy Ghost.
