Good question.

Sometimes comfort food really does make you feel better, like, for example, if you are feeling lonely and you eat something that reminds you of home.

Sometimes comfort food might also make you feel better if you are simply hungry or lacking some nutrition.

At other times, eating is simply something to do. It might not make you feel better, per se, but it might distract you from whatever is making you feel bad.

Also, eating generally raises levels of serotonin in the brain, which is known to be a neurotransmitter responsible for a sense of general well-being.

Absolutely because comfort food is the food(s) that a person likes best but doesn't necessarily eat routinely. One night this week it was cold and rainy and I was in need of something to make me feel good (well....better) about the upcoming surgery I had scheduled. So I fried a big skillet of potatoes and onions, fried hot dog halves, and fried "over easy" eggs. Served it with toast and jam and hot coffee. I used canola oil ...told myself that was healthier for me...
It was a delicious supper and I slept well for a change. And then I was ready for rotissiere chicken and broccoli slaw the next evening.

I don't know how much it's supposed to make you feel better as help you to relax a bit. i know that when I'm down, I make myself a strong black coffee and put a big scoop of vanilla ice cream in it.. It helps me to sit back and relax, which in turn helps me to reflect on my issues. I think so, yes.

A big bowl of mac and cheese with some fresh french bread and butter. IT always makes me feel good, if not very full!

Yup. One meal in particular does it for me. Homemade meatloaf with mashed potatoes (made with cream, butter, salt, & pepper) & gravy and homemade creamed corn- not that crap out of a can.
Ummmm, I feel all warm and toasty just thinking about it.

You think you feel better while you are shoveling food in your face. Once that stops, like a drug, you start jonsing again.
