I always seem to order the same drinks because either I don't know what else to get or I'm afraid the bartender won't know what a specific drink is because it's not well known.
I'm fond of:
Blue Hawaiian
Malibu and Coke
Raspberry Stoli and 7Up
Electric Lemonade
Sex on the Beach
Seabreeze
and that's all I can think of. More ideas that are common and tasty?

A Mojito is always nice. Rum, mint leaves, lime juice, sugar and soda. Obviously you need to gauge what sort of place you're in, before ordering. A run of the mill pub that doesn't specialise in cocktails probably wont have fresh mint leaves lying around. My advice is to stick to something simple. Vodka and soda, Gin and Tonic, Rum and Coke. Or just experiment with some bottled drinks, you'll find a popular one you like and then you can order it anywhere (Bacardi breezer is a popular one for girls) If the place does do cocktails, they'll often have a menu. If the bar is quiet, you could even ask the bartender. I'm sure it would brighten up his day to be asked his opinion @Ed_Fox: So you havent drank alcohol in 40 years. Woopy doo, Big deal. Since the question was about alcohol, I dont even know why you bothered to comment if you apparently "dont have any thing against alcohol"

Honey, if the bartender isn't familiar with the drink you want, that reflects on him, not you.

But I recommend sticking to what's on the drink menu. Otherwise, your drink probably won't taste good.

try a Scooby Snack, or a Junebug if you're on the east coast they're the same thing, all the girls I know order Cosmopolitans or some sort of fruity martini drink... I think they're fond of the shape of the glass, well I guess it is sexy. :)

Hey, bartenders that know their stuff would only be too happy to make you a wonderful drink. Decide what you like as your favorite liquor base (gin, rum, brandy, vodka, whisky, tequila), then what are your favorite flavors and tastes - do you like creamy, or sweet, sour, or fizzy... You don't have to know the names of drinks. Tell your bartender what your preferences are and let him/her suggest and mix up something fantastic just for you :)

I tend to go for red wines mainly Merlot that's all you have to ask for as they always have one.
Also I like black Russians without the coke.
cosmopolitan and Margarita are a classy drink for a girl, though they are and acquired taste.
