Absolutely.

There are the South African Railways, Rhodesian Railways, Mozambique Railways, East African Railways to name some, servicing across the Karoo (a desert region), George to Knysna, along the coast line, thence to Bloemfontein, the states of Rhodesia, Mozambique, Zambia, Swaziland, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. I'm sure there are others.

These still employ steam traction, in some areas, with the primary builders of their locomotives over the years have been British or German, in standard (for British Africa) gage 3'6" This gage was arrived at by means of compromise between those who wanted 4'81/2" standard gage and those wanting 2'6" gage).

There were narrow gage operations of both 2' and 2'6", some still in use for freight operations.
