I also have FVL, and have had one clot. I do not have to take coumadin for life. was your clot a DVT or a PE? This could make a difference. Mine was a DVT, and while it was extremely large, I was told that I would not be on coumadin for life. Though if I had another clot, more than likely that would change.

It is best to talk to your dr about this. Find a good (and compassionate...those are hard to find) hematologist to talk to. I have a hemo and a vascular surgeon that gave me my information.

Good luck. I hope that you won't have to be on coumadin for life, it would make life a lot easier for you.

You need to see a hematologist. Look in the phone book and make sure that you have more than one opinion. Long term use of coumadin can cause many problems. So get opinions from a vascular surgeon, an internist, the hematologist, and the doctor who gave you the coumadin in the first place. If you are not satisfied with the answers, go to a University teaching hospital and be worked up fully...time consuming but you will not likely walk away not knowing.
