If it came down to it would you agree to a neuteral spay and neuter law that applied to all dog breeds but required people who owned Pit type dogs to purchase a heafty license to breed and they could only breed if the dog was show or working, such as weight pull or hunting or confirmation?
of course the law could not be governed by a body of board members it would have to be something drawn up and final that could not be ammended later for some politician with a personnel agenda.
Do you think it would help our breed if this happened?

Kaska, I agree with you but what then would you suppose.
We Pit lovers cannot continue to say punish the deed not the breed when the Media will not talk about any other incident but a potential Pit attack. We are fighting a up hill battle which I am prepared to do but what would you present to a board of council members who would pass a BSL if not presented with another alternative?

Folks, remember. I am intensely against any BSL, I write letters routinely to majors and counsil members to stop it, but I am just wondering if anyone has any idea to help our dogs before the politicians listen to the people who have never met one much less owned one.

I believe it would be a good idea, as we need to work on how and who breeds dogs to start(not just pits), there are so many unwanted dogs right now in the world. I rescue pits and see so many that were bought for that tough dog look and as soon as the hype wears off they discard. I think a true pit lover would appreciate knowing the breed could survive if tougher fines were opposed on backyard breeders. I recommend any dog unless you're a true breeder or it is being shown to be neutered or spayed as soon as possible. Lets all work together in stopping breed bans and promote responsibility.

It sounds good in theory but what about the responsible Pit owners who dogs are just house pets. Where does that leave them concerning breeding? With the over population of Pits I think it is best to have the spayed or neutered regardless. A healthy license to breed sounds like a great idea. A owner should have to prove that they provide proper care for their current dogs and have sufficient means to provide for the puppies as well. This should include medical care, proper housing and exercises not just money. The owner should even have to take a personality test to determine what kind of owner he really is. I am a owner of two Pits and the thought of anyone harming them brings tears to my eyes as the thought of them not being in my life. I agree with those who say "punish the deed not the breed" the Pits are victims in this whole thing as well.

It's a nice idea, but it will never happen. I love my dogs, and they have all been fixed, especially my Pit Bull. But you can not hope to pass a law that tells people that if they are poor, then they can't own a dog.( meaning they have to pay for a spay or neuter if they expect to own a dog) And the Pit Bull is the poor man's pedigreed dog. There is at least one tied to the tongue of every house trailer in the county I live in. Almost all of the lower income families I know own at least one. It just won't happen. You might as well try to pass a law that says poor folks can't have kids. You'd have the ACLU all over you & it would be squashed before it even began. It's much easier for the government to just ban the breeds, claiming public safety as a reason.

No I would not support that. After all these cities are done imposing hefty restrictions on pit bulls there will then be a new breed.

Responsible owners are not the problem. If you are a low life to begin with do you think they are really going to obey the law and fix their dogs? No if so we would not have a dog fighting problem.

Laws should apply to any breed of dog. What about the presa canary dogs that killed that lady in California? The Rottweilers that killed that boy in Kansas, The Airedale that killed the baby don't remember what state.

I think breeders of any kind of dog should have to be licensed. However, like someone else said, the kind of people that breed pit bulls and other dogs for fighting would ignore the law anyway. I'd just like to say that my mom has a pit bull mix and he's a sweetheart. He's stubborn and hard headed but sweet.
I can't think of one pit bull that I've met that hasn't been friendly.
It's irresponsible owners that are the problem, not the dogs.

I own a pit, he is my daughter's dog. He is a family pet. I don't participate in any shows, fighting, hunting, breeding or working him so it wouldn't matter one way or the other what the government says unless they tried to tell me I had to put him to sleep. We would pack up and move to the woods where no one would even know we had him. Our dogs are loved like they are children, they are our family too. I am a little sick of people thinking just because a bunch of idiots who think it is cool to fight helpless dogs that have no say in the matter, that pits are BAD dogs. I could train my Chihuahua to attack, does that mean that they are a bad breed? Sorry for the ranting.

Honestly, no. The fact of the matter is that we need more super hero videos of our breed. And if I had a cam I would surely show her off. My pit is so popular and locally she has changed alot of peoples opinions about the breed. And I always stress it to these skeptics, that its all in how you train the pit. They only have a bad rep because we live in a bad world. Back in the day they were well known for their loyalty. Dutch boy, little rascals, RCA. Get the word out, they are truely a masters best friend.

i think that it would be good for the dogs because they tend to be bred and bought for the wrong reasons.
