Keep it clean and put antibiotic ointment on it. Take him to the vet asap to get him on some antibiotics, it sounds like an infection.

keep watch of the dog . you might need to put a special cone kind of collar on the Dog to prevent him for scratching more.
if you cant afford the vet then you can get some drops called neo sporran from the drug store there are some there for eyes ask the chemist about that . as well there is a cream of the same kind that is only to go on the outside of an eye ask about that .
try to see if there is anything in his eye still if so plain water flushing is the way to go don't stick anything in there like tweezers to try to remove anything .
if this does not get better then you should take the dog to the vet.
oh the collar i spoke of is one you most likely have seen a big cone shaped thing that looks silly . you could buy one or make one yourself if you have some suitable plastic . good luck

Take him to the vet, If you can get his temp I would suggest checking for a fever (dogs do not have 98.7 body temps). if he has one then he needs antibiotics. I wouldnt advise antibiotic creams if its too close the the opening of his eye or you could damage his eye.
Best advice, SEE A VET
