For me a great grilled cheese sandwich would be made on Texas Toast (the nice thick sliced bread) with a combo of American and Swiss cheese. In addition I add two strips of bacon and two slices of fresh tomato ..... Yummy!

i would describe a grilled cheese sadnwhich as the following.
two pieces of bread made into toast
with lots of cheese melted in between them
the cheese is usually cheddar

I like to put two slices of bread together with the cheese in the middle and grill in a cast iron skillet where I have melted butter so-warm crunchy buttery flavored bread with a creamy cheese inside-good alone or with soup. Um-----Good!

Delicious with tomato soup. Or tomatoes in it. Or a toasted tomato and cheese bagel...mmmm.
If you're looking for a more literal answer, I'd say it's 2 slices of bread fried butter-side out with american cheese in the middle.

the best way to describe it is to explain how to do it. you get two pieces of bread, butter both of them. place on of them on the frying pan and your sliced cheese then the other slice of bread. cook the one side till it's nicely brown then flip and do the same on the other side. when finished put on a plate cut into a triangle and enjoy. dip in ketchup for added flavour. Thx bud, that's exacly what i am going to have when i get home from work
