Most things are designed to be fail safe. By cutting off a supply of a reactant to an exothermic reaction, you will stop the reaction. This is safer then having it get a lot of that reactant.

Perhaps the exothermic reaction was releasing more heat energy then the incoming steam and "pushed" the valve closed... cut off the steam... slowed itself down...
