Single AF is what you use in a regular shot.
You press the button 1/2 down to lock the focus, or all the way down - in which case it focuses and then takes the picture.

Continuous AF constantly adjusts the focus for your subject (or your feet or where ever it's pointing).
It's almost exactly like a camcorder does while filming.

It's better if you want to take a burst of several shots to make sure you got whomever foot crossed the finish line first.

Depends on what you take photos of - if you need it, then it's nice.
Otherwise, it's probably just an extra expense.

If it was me, I'd take image stabilization over that feature - if they were offered for the same price.

Continuous autofocus tracks what it thinks id s the target and adjusts focus. Single autofocus focuses and does not change while you track a moving object.

Unless AF means something completely different.

Single AF will focus once when shutter is pressed half way. Continuous will look for focus when you press the shutter half way down until you trip the shutter.
