When I tell people I am an English major, I get the same question, "what are you going to do with that?" I want to write, maybe write a novel or something, but I know I'll need something else to be my way of making money continually. So what can I do with an English degree???

Check out the OOH (Occupational Outlook Handbook) on www.bls.gov. Check out job ads....think about transferrable skills...if you write well. that is a skill in demand in many careers. The question isn't so much what CAN you be....what CAN'T you be? You may not be able to be an Accountant or a nurse or an engineer (those are generally licensed and require some specific coursework and licensing exams...) but 80% of jobs are built around skills, not majors....

Good writing is in demand in a lot of areas. You could go into journalism, public relations, publishing, technical writing, speechwriting, grant writing, or other types of jobs in industry, government, or other fields which require writing skills.

my happiest friends who graduated with english degrees are journalists and scholars. but if you really want to write books, that's what you should do. good luck!
