Leather is far more biodegradable than even the best leather substitutes. It is extremely rare to find fossilized leather, while some forms of plastics may last longer than radioactive waste-- they don't decay and diminish in quantity over time. And, even if inorganic materials are used to process the leather, they do not add substantially to its resistance to biodegradation. Leather susbstitutes are essentialy plastic, with all its faults.
