quote
Audie Murphy was the most decorated U.S. soldier in World War II. Though he was only 21 years old at the end of the war, he had killed 240 German soldiers, been wounded three times, and had earned an amazing 33 awards and medals, including the Medal of Honor. After the war, Murphy appeared in more than 40 films, wrote poetry, and continued to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Both skill and luck. American soldiers were very well trained and equipped for the most part. One has to qualify that. Early US troops were green and badly led (Africa, early on) and sometimes, they were used as cannon fodder with very little training or experience, as in the First Wave of D-Day (not the paratroops, who were superbly trained) but the poor slobs on Omaha, who knew nothing about anything and were basically weapons and supply mules for the following waves. Experienced commanders will tell you that the best troops to send into tough situations are the inexperienced ones, because experienced combat troops would have never consented to go into the First Wave of D-Day. So it's skill, luck and the decisions of the commanders that determines your fate. Hitler, for instance, had a job in WWI with a 100%++ casualty rate, and he survived. Go figure. (trench-runner).
