I still haven't figured out why people who aren't members of the church speak as if they completely understand us, our doctrines, or anything at all about us for that matter.

I am LDS and the answer to your question is that all adult members of the church who are worthy and enter the Temple commit to wear garments for the rest of their lives. It is not just for those getting married, although for some, marriage may be the first time they enter the Temple.

The garments are white to symbolize purity. They help assure modesty in dress as well as maintain sexual purity. They also help us have respect for the attributes of God, and, if they are worn appropriately, they are symbolic of what Paul regarded as taking upon one the whole armor of God (see Eph. 6:13). The wearing of garments is an outward expression of an inward covenant, and symbolizes Christlike attributes in one's mission in life. The wearing of sacred clothing is not new and most leaders in the various religious organization of the world today still wear special clothing. It is similar to how a priest or reverend wears a collar or robe. We simply wear ours underneath our clothes. They are not strange or freakish in anyway. They appear much like normal knee length athletic underwear and a white t-shirt, but with much more significance, of course.

I hope that this helps answer your question. Please let me know if you would like addition information on this or any other church topic.

First of all, it's not just "mormon women" and getting married is not that part really either. When a person receives their endowment in the temple is the time when they receive their garments. They are not uncomfortable or weird or anything - as Kristy so nicely suggested (since of course she does not actually wear them she would know right.) My guess would be those who do not like wearing them or think they are uncomfortable or whatever aren't worthily wearing them. They do not fully understand the sacredness of the covenants they've made which relate to the garments.
I feel it an honor to wear them. They are a reminder of the sacred and wonderful covenants we have made with our Heavenly Father. I waited 5 years to be spiritually ready to go to the temple and it was the best decision I have ever made (along with marrying my eternal companion of course).

Nope. Only people that go to the temple are priviliged to wear the garment (which, by the way, are not 'long underwear' and are usually to the knees or above). Many LDS members are not ready to go to the temple, or they have joined the church after they were married and must wait and prepare spiritually.
And it is both the man and the woman that wear garments, not just women. Actually, I really like mine and I hope I am worthy to wear them for the rest of my earthly life.

It ain't even long underwear it's called garments. Yes they wear it the rest of their lives after marriage because it protects them and it's suppose to be a symbol.

Remember that these are TEMPLE garments. This is something that the very elect get. The church says that 8-10% of the population is good enough to get into the temple.

Last I checked the garments were just to be worn during services. Maybe I heard from the wrong Mormons...

I wouldn't call it long underwear; it's just long enough to ensure that the clothing they wear is modest. And besides, aren't you going to wear underwear the rest of your life? :-)

Yes,take a look at the Mormon underwear;

and the history:

http://www.i4m.com/think/temples/mormon-garments.htm

The original purpose of wearing garments was to remind the men of their oaths - especially oaths of secrecy regarding the plural marriage doctrine. So the men wearing them would have something unforgettable on them as a constant reminder of their oaths. In this sense, wearing garments is much like wearing a talisman:
1 : an object held to act as a charm to avert evil and bring good fortune
2 : something producing apparently magical or miraculous effects

Traditionally, temple workers have told women that they must wear the garment on their skin and bras must be worn over the garment.

Even though women continue to suffer discomfort (especially while menstruating) and a higher incident of yeast infections, wearing garments as the church prescribes continues as a fundamental practice of endowed women today.
