I really don't understand the difference between the two.

NOthing... just the ocean over which they occur...

Hurricanes occure over the atlantic
Typhoons occur over the Pacific

There is no difference weather wise. In our part of the world we refer to it as a hurricane while in the Asian countries it is referred to as a typhoon. Same weather event.

typhoon is a black boy. hurricane is a storm.
