What is rational and should have been her response is that god hates her. That's how I would interpret it if I were praying and he nails my *** with a bolt of lightning. Her initial response is is to thank god for being alive? Are you kidding? I would be freaking out thinking god has got it out for me and instead of taking me quietly he is going to punish me. She should be afraid, very afraid.

There are a few ways to seeing the rationalize the thing.
1) The lightning strike was inevitable (work of satan), but by praying to God, she was saved and she survived the event
2) If she was a sinner, it was a divine wake up call, asking her to repent her ways. God allowed her to survive as He is All-Merciful and gave her another chance of life.
however, as an Atheist, that's b.s. for me (no offence)

What does rational thought have to do with belief systems? They aren't MEANT to be compatable. One is systematic exploration of those things that are either testable, or repeatable (but not both), and the other is an organized attempt to explain things that are neither testable or repeatable (religion).
Would you really get rid of such just because it doesn't match YOUR belief system? You think God is a myth. THAT is a belief. You have no proof, and although the burden of proof is on someone trying to prove God exists, that only supports a LACK of belief in God, not a denial of his possible existance. Denial of the existance of God is a belief, like believing that unicorns don't exist just because they don't show up in your neighborhood (planet?). It's not rational to do that, either.
Why not leave the question open? We'll, even people who don't realize they have a belief system of their own, or even deny it to themselves have freedom of religion in this country.
Or are you trying to abolish one of our most sacred rights? (pun intended)

Right, God lets 3000 die on 9/11 and thousands of Americans more in Iraq, not to mention perhaps hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis; God, everyday, allows children to go hungry and starve to death; God allows millions of people to live and die in pain – however, he goes to the trouble for some woman in Alabama (not to mentions all the touchdowns he scores on the weekends). The question is, why not just stop the lightning strike in the first place.

A sad occurance
Ecc 9:11 I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the mighty; nor even bread to the wise; nor even riches to the men of discernment; nor even favor to knowing men. For time and occurrence happen to them all.

Maybe it was a wake-up call of some sort. Did you know that Jim Caviezel was hit by lightning while filming Passion of Christ? While he was carrying the cross. Weird ?

First of all, my heart goes out to the family of the woman.
Now, it's rational if her prayer is to go back 'home' now.

Are you nuts? Or are you just brainwashed into believing religious leaders who define God as all knowing and all powerful; consequenly, by such logic, responsible for lightening strikes.
A Possibility that answers your question:God is a loving scientist from an older more advanced planet. He may not control lightening, but he and his advanced planet are able to reconstruct us after our stay here on Earth.

of course its rational if she's a christian! she isn't dead is she? and even if she was, we are supposed to praise God through all things, so yes, I would say this is rational.
