ON SEPT 29, 2006 I WAS INVOLVED AN ACCIDENT AND ARRESTED FOR OWI. I WAS IN POSSESSION OF 1 ATIVAN PILL NOT PRESCRIBED TO ME, BUT GIVEN TO ME BY A FRIEND, TO HELP RELAX ME AFTER A STRESSFUL DAY. 3 WEEKS LATER I WAS KICKED OUT OF MY EMT-B CLASS AND TOLD I COULD NEVER BE CERTIFIED. WAS TOLD THAT IT WASN'T WORTH MY TIME TO FIGHT. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS?

If you think they are bluffing, can you give me a place where I can get accredited information to back it up?

It'll be a difficult fight for you to win-- in most states in the US, police, fire and EMS certification is not automatically lost for a misdemeanor, ubless the misdemeanor involves DUI, illegal drug use, physical violence or domestic abuse, Since your case included a drug arrest, the EMT-B class was legally justified in dropping you.

You wrote that you were arrested at the end of September... have you been to court yet? If not, make sure you appear (looking very remorseful), and try to get it plead down 'careless and negligent' or some other charge that doesn't mention the meds. (DON'T say it's because you want to be an EMT-- if asked, say that you know you screwed up, and you're ashamed and sorry, and don't want drugs on your record for the rest of your life, etc.. If you say that it's because you want to be an EMT you may hurt your chance, since a lot of people have trouble with the idea of somebody who takes illegal drugs driving an ambulance.)

Even if you're allowed to plea down, you might not be able to go back to the same EMT-B class you were in, because they know about your arrest. Since it's pretty clear that they are among those who don't believe that drug users should drive ambulance, it might be hard to convince them to let you in... or to pass you if you did get in.

You might also consider doing something different from EMT work anyway, if you sometimes need Ativan to deal with stressful days. EMTs can have a lot of stressful days. Car accidents and SIDS deaths, shootings and sexual abuse cases... and times when, no matter how hard you work, patients die on you anyway. You might consider looking for something with less built-in stress, if you need prescription medication 'to relax after a stressful day'.

I couldn;t find any info about a misdemeanor barring you from certification as an EMT-B in Indiana. But I attached the EMS Responder Magazine page for Indiana, if you go to the bottom of the page it has the number for the contact for information on EMT classes/education.
