Unless you actually held her hand with the knife in it and forced her to cut, then you're not responsible. Why exactly do you think that people think it's your fault?

There is nothing you can do to change another person's mind. As many of the other responders have already stated - YOU are NOT responsible for what your friend is doing to herself. Your friend has a serious problem for which she needs professional help. It is easy for me to say "Don't let other people try to make you responsible for your friend's actions" and another for you to be able to follow that advice. Talk to someone you trust. Try to find a support network similar to Ala-non. Some place where you can safely talk about how your friend is harming herself; learn how you can deal with it; and learn how to respond to insensitive, ignorant people who tell you that you are responsible for what she is doing.

First of all what makes them think that you are responsible for a friends choosing to cut herself up., My opinion is that she however sad it is--is responsible for cutting herself. Only she can make that disicion!! I feel for her though I don't know her-sounds to me that she had major issues--desparate issues, whether you were in her life or not in her life. Ya know what? Ya just have to set them straigth ONE TIME!!! That this young lady has problems in her life and one of her problems is that she is responsible for herself- and if she doesn't take the power or have the power over what ever it is that is driving her to self mutilation--that is just the sad sad fact. If you suggest to her to get help so she doesn't continue to self distruct--that is the only thing you can do. If she chooses to continue as she is, that is horribly sad. FRIEND UNLESS YOU CUT HER UP YOURSELF AND I BELIEVE THAT YOU DID NOT .YOU ARE NO WAY RESPONSIBLE= FRIEND YOUR FRIEND IS 100% RESPONSIBLE FOR HER CUTTING HER SELF UP. WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN NOW IS TO CONVINCE HER TO SEE A PSYCOLOGIST AND PSCHIATRIST IMMEDIATELY!!!! YA KNOW FRIEND MAYBE THERE IS A WAY THAT YOU CAN GET HER BAKERACTED, CALL A HOSPITAL THAT HAS A PSYCHIACTRIC UNITE--OR THIS YOUNG LADY IS DOOMED! MY E-MAIL ADDRESS IS: cjydawn@yahoo.com.

Let me know how things progressed. one day i would love to here that she overcame this distructive behavio

Don't let anyone look in your face and say you are at fault!

people with suicidal tendencies will be suicidal no matter what you do.... it ain't your fault. it's her problem she has to get out of it herself... stop minding what other people think... you'll only make yourself feel worse.and your pal cutting yourself is actually a call for help... she doesn't really want to die because if she did she would have cut her neck... you'd die within minutes..... if you cut your wrist it may take hours!! help will arrive before you had sufficient blood loss to end your life... your pal can still be helped...instead of blaming yourself or letting others blame you... help her... she needs you now.

Tell your friend's parents now. Your friend really needs help dealing with her issues in a healthy way. Why would anyone seriously blame you for her behaviour?

Don't talk about it. It is your friend's problem and her story to tell if she wants to. It isn't anyone elses business what your friend does. (except for her parents) Don't worry about changing people's minds. They will think what they want no matter what you say.
