It is bright orange with some having refelctive tape down the side. There is large print indicating what type of "black box" it is and saying "Do Not Open". There can be two types of "black boxes". One is the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) which is used to record flight parameters... speed, altitude, ect. The other one is the Cockpit Voice Recorder. This records cockpit conversations. The term "black box" originated when after a meeting about the first commercial FDR. It was originally named the "Red Egg" for its colour and shape. Someone at the meeting commented that, "This is a wonderful black box". Since then it has stuck. Nobody in the Aviation Safety Prof. uses this term, it is used more by the media and general public. It has also been said that the word "black" is symbolic in that when one is pulled, there is usually death associated with it.

Both black boxex (think black book with all the secrets) are bright orange in color. The voice data recorder and flight data recorder are painted this way so that in an accident, they are easier to find.

Orange,apparently....The term "Black Box" is a throwback to prototype/early development electronic equipment, where to save unnecessary explanation or security exposure,it was given the "Black Box" label..

Very bright Neon orange to be spotted from a distance, and with those plasticy/rubbery silver strips that you find on sneakers ad jackets, just to illuminate at any presence of light

They also have french terms for the box written on them. Both the CVR and DFDR are orange, and usually have accoustic beacons on them so they can be found underwater. The water actually turns them on and they run on a lithium battery. We time change our batteries every 5 years on US military aircraft.
