Yes, you can. Many Democrats are Christians. In fact, it wasn't too long ago (the 1960s) when people questioned whether Kennedy (a Democrat) could be a good president given his Catholic faith. And of course, many Republicans are Christians.
No party has a hold on faith, so you can certainly be independent. There are some who would advocate that a Christian should be independent. Christians are told to "be not of the world." Also, the wordliness, conflicts and insults common to politics are certainly not representative of christ-like behavior.
Politics are your choice, and a Christian faith can be (and has been) used to justify nearly any political perspective. The early 20th century saw a popular Catholic Communist movement in South America. During the rennaissance, monarchies used the idea of Divine Right of Kings to supports totalitarianism. Christian Democrats say that Christ preaches charity and love. Christian Republicans say that Christ preaches moral purity.
You choose.

Being Christian, being independent politically and supporting freedom of choice sounds to me like a natural thing. Most modern Christians are.

Politics is politics and religion is religion. Not all Christians believe the same things politically. There are many Christians that are pro-choice. There is a group of people that are from many religions and they work for pro-choice issues.

You say you are a Christian. If you truly are, then you will follow the word of God as He speaks it in the Bible. There are two controversial subjects, homosexuality and abortion, that a lot of people (who are not true Christians) believe should be a matter of choice. God does not sit on the fence and either should you if you follow his word. That doesn't mean you are required to hate people who are homosexual or have abortions. You need to pray for them. But you don't do or say things that would condone that kind of behavior either. Read and understand the Bible so you can know what God wants. If you are a Christian you will want to please him and that might mean getting off the fence and getting on the right side -- the side of God.

I believe we as Christians should be independent politically. Then we vote on the candidate and not the party. We need to evaluate each and every candidate as to where they stand on the issues that matter.

My understanding is a Christian follows Christs teachings so we would make decisions based on the truth and what Jesus would do. The thing is you have to know what Jesus did . So much of the Bible has been misconstrued by Evil King Constantine and others. If you want the original teachings of Christ the ancient Christian Essenes have the lost teachings go to http://www.essene.ort

Dear, that is why we have separation of church and state, so that your church can't tell you what to vote for. In fact, there are a lot of churches that could end up in trouble with the IRS for promoting both Republicans and Democrats in the recent elections, because churches are non-profit and it is a violation of their tax status to tell their congregations who to vote for or officially endorse one candidate over another.
