I have naturally curly hair that is below my shoulders in length. The problem is, the longer my hair, the less curl there is. I really like my curls, but I like my hair long as well. What I'd like to know is: Is it alright to perm naturally curly hair to redefine the curls? And if you perm it, will it get all poofy and frizzy because of the chemicals?

Have you tried using a good "curl up" gel? and a diffuser on your blow dryer?

both of those things might help, they work for me.
also a layered haircut might be the answer to your problem, that way you can keep your length, and your curl!

I have been a hairdresser for 24 years and have permedmany naturally curly heads of hair. I agree with those that have suggested a few layers to remove some of the weight. However, a perm done by someone who knows what they are doing will not only give your your curl back, it will give you more control and make the curls more defined and even. No more tiny, fuzzy curls here and wavy curls there. It will also help get rid of some of the natural frizzyness. You will want to use larger perm rods and check every 5 minutes. It often takes only 5 minutes to process depending on the type of perm you use. Go to a reputable salon and get a consultation, most salons do these free, before you have the perm done so you can meet with the stylist. It may be that your hair doesn't need a perm or just a few of those layers we spoke of but you won't know until you talk to a professional who can look at your hair. Good luck.

For me, i don't think you need to 're-curl' it with a perm - maybe you can stick to a curling iron in the morning. but if you do it daily, maybe a perm will work for you.

Yes, and if you perm your hair, it WILL get poofy and frizzy. I don't know if it's caused by chemicals, but you might need some type of gel or hold that can keep it from poofing up.

Well as a {hair stylist my self} no don't perm your hair you won't like it if you do it , it will make it very frizzy and then you will have to deal with the frizzyness that the perm itself has giving you . I would advise you not to do this sort of thing it will damage your curly hair if chemicals is put to your hair. Now if you want to color / bleach it, it is fine but you dont put curl on top of natural curls {DAMAGE}.

Have you tried a shaggy hair cut? Or a layered cut? A layered cut would bring out the natural curl.I wouldn't perm it a good cut will bring out your natural curl. a razzor cut would also be good. You can still keep it long but just go to a good hair dresser who knows how to shape and trim and cut curly hair. Good luck!
