Why do people tap a pack of cigarettes on their palm before opening?

When you "pack" a pack of cigarettes you are pushing the tobacco as far as it will go to make the cigarette burn slower and smoother.

Probably for the same reason that some guys tap a can of snuff or the top of a beer can. They saw somebody else do the same thing and want to show that they are cool.
Supposedly, the tapping is to pack the tobacco a little harder, or to keep a can of beer from foaming over.

I always did it bc it would pack the tobacco more evenly, thereby avoiding uneven burning and possible loss of the cherry, which can cause annoyance and sometimes injury, ha ha.

my lord thank you for asking.this drives me freakin nuts.its all new too.ive been smoking for 25 years and it has started fairly recently.one moron sees the other do it and bam its all over,cigarettes are ready to smoke right from the pack leave em alone.the origin is from people whom smoke non filtered cigs tapping the cig to pack one end so tobacco wont get in mouth. not for teeny boppers trying to be cool. i mock em every time i see it. they dont even know why they do it or how stupid it makes em look.
