My puppy Gizmo a is Pekingese/poodle male. He was diagnosed to have renal dysplasia when he was 3-4 mths old but is doing very well. I would really like to have him neutered, but my veterinarian recommends against it because of the anesthesia. She mentioned the drug Neutersol, but did not know where I can find it or something like it. If anyone has any information PLEASE HELP GIZMO! We live in Ohio so if there are any vets near that perform a chemical a neuter, please contact us! Thank you!

I am trying to do the best thing for my dog. I am looking to get more information about this procedure and THEN make an informed decision. If Dr.s told you to give your dog back to the breeder and have no hope -- I hope you would not give up on him after he was a part of your family.

The chemical neuter is decent at preventing the dog from getting another dog pregnant, but it doesn't do as much for the behavioral issues normally associated with an intact male. He will still have some male dog hormones, so he will still chase after females in heat, he will still spray, mount, etc. It won't do as much for the health benefits associated with neutering (reduction of testicular cancer, etc).
That being said, lots of people have intact male dogs and they make fine family pets, as long as you understand that they will act like intact pets. Over a few months following Neutersol application, the testes will actually atrophy (get smaller) and behavior issues associated with male dogs will be less apparent over time.
I read one site which said that as of 2006, there was no company currently manufacturing Neutersol. I couldn't find another site to confirm or deny this, though. If I were you, I'd call every vet in your community and ask to make sure. In addition, I'd contact the local veterinary college and ask them. Most vet colleges will perform cutting edge procedures and don't charge much for them.

Hope this helps!

There is NO WAY I would allow someone to inject chemicals into my dogs testicles!

Leave him intact. Why do you want to neuter him bad enough to do that? Is he marking or you don't want the reponsability of an intact male? What is the reason?

But I still don't understand why you need to have him neutered?

I didn't realize you are in Ohio. Are you aware they are trying to pass a mandatory spay/neuter law in your state? If they are allowed to pass it, it will not matter if a neuter is risky, they will force you to do it anyway or they can seize him. Hope you are doing your part to fight it.

i think the whole treatment has to be done before they are six months old. when it first came out that is what they said.
