Most people do think for themselves. That's why the world is in such a mess. But what about you - are you part of the solution, or part of the problem?

Well, those are not only two different topics, but each one could cover a lot of ground! lol
As for religion, I can sort of see why some people might want to reach back in time to something sacred for hope, rather than look to the future without it, and only find rotting in the ground. I'm not putting down athiests, either; I'm more of one myself, I just kind of see how some of the religious people think.
As far as politics go, some people have strong feelings for certain ideals and ethics they have, and if one party seems to have close to the same ideals, then they may be reaching out for that.

Well to really answer this would be a long discourse in evolutionary psychology. Suffice it to say that laziness (conservation of caloric expenditure) and the tribal reflex (affiliation with common interest persons) are survival strategies that worked well for our distant ancestors, but change has happened faster than our DNA can adapt to the changing demands.

Communism or Socialism is the answer? We should let a government take religion out of society and have a dictator instead of voting for whom we choose.
Honey I do think for myself. But I value other peoples opions and ideas as well. That is how I come to my own conclusions.

If most people were above average then everyone would be average. Average thinking people are what set apart those who are smart and able to think for themselves. These people make up an important part of the population because they are the ones that follow fads, fashion trends, and pop culture. Without them all of these industries would be non-existant.

They are afraid of change and how they would be looked upon by the other believers.
Religions teach that self esteem is a sin ( selfishness).
When you are taught that you don`t count unless this make believe god accepts the way you live and give ,you don`t have much choice except to follow .

good point for the lack of grey matter among the masses perhaps the theory of mass psychology where the larger the group the more the mentality is decreased comes into play

In sociology there is a phenomenon in which poor people teach their children to obey and imitate themselves while rich people are more inclined to teach their children to think for themselves and be more independent.
To read more about this you may want to read "rich dad, poor dad."
So my answer to your question is that it may well be that people are continuing the patterns of behaviors bestowed upon them by their parents and thus are more or less inclined to be swindled by people or organizations that give you the feel goods.

Because too many people are like cattle, trudging along through life without pausing to seek the truth.

Because thinking takes effort. It's easier to blindly follow someone else. Especially when everyone else's doing it.
