To criticize or reprove sharply; reprimand.
To check or repress.
That's what rebuke means, and when you do it in the name of Jesus, usually it's because you're rebuking someone or something (Satan or Demons) that will only obey in the name of Jesus.

This can mean many things. You could be rebuking a sickness in the name of Jesus, or rebuking a demon. You're basically getting rid of something bad in the name of Jesus.

It means you use the name of Jesus to put the demons under your feet where they belong. If you are a believer then you are in Christ;spirtulally speaking. He is in heaven seated at the right hand of God. The devil trys to cause havock down here because we still live in our fleshly bodies. He knows his time is short and soon he will be put down for good. When we rebuke the devil in Jesus name it means with His authority we put the devil in his place. Example: "Satan you are a liar and what you say is all lies so go and quit talking to me, I choose to believe God who says I am victorous in all things and I will win" In Jesus name

In his name is the key. When something is done in someone's name it is in their character, in their being, it is in them that it is done. If a demon is rebuked in Jesus' name then you had better be sure you are in Jesus' name. They laugh at many.

Basically, using your faith as a shield against some kind of negativity, like saying "get thee behind me , Satan" same thing, usually is said when someone is stating a religious falsehood, or making a threat of some kind.

It's a way for people to tell you off, but they think they have Jesus on their side when they do it, so they get to feel righteous about it.
