Whiskey is a generic term for any liquor distilled from fermented grain. Scotch is a particular type (along with rye, bourbon, etc.)

Scotch is short for "Scotch Whisky"
In other words, Scotch is whisky. Conversely, not all whisk(e)y is Scotch (the Scots spell it without the 'e'). In order to be legitimately called "Scotch" it must be made entirely in Scotland ad be aged in wooden barrels a minimum of 3 years.

Whiskey is just the generic term for any spirit that is distilled of fermented grains and aged in wood (that's where the brown comes from).

If I have it right, all the difference in the world. Scotch is a mellow, finely and slowly aged drink. Amber in color.

I think quality also counts for a comparison. For instance, a high quality whiskey can beat a low quality scotch. Not sure about that.

Scotch - is Whiskey made from only Scottish ingredients - water and barley and cannot be replicated exactly ,worldwide ,even though scientists have tried.
Whiskey - is the same liqour , made from the same or similar ingredients but made in various countries based on the scotish recipe. Still known as whiskey but not priveliged to call itself a scotch whiskey due to its location.

From what I understand, whiskey is a broad name and Scotch is a type. There are many types of Whiskey like Burbon Whiskey, Canadian whisky, Corn whiskey, Irish whiskey, Moonshine, Rye whiskey, Tennessee whiskey, Welsh whisky. Basically they are different in the way they are distilled and what is used to make them (malt, wheat, corn).

Read all about them in the links below.

Scotch IS a whiskey. It's just how they made it in Scotland years ago. It's made here too, obviously, but it's just a different blend. Aging has alot to do with it too. Bourbon is whiskey, too. So is Sour mash (Southern Comfort).

Scotch is usually made from a single-malt, while a whiskey is made from multiple malts.
