First, you need to use the distributive property.
So multiply 5 by d and then by 4 to get:
5d + 20
Do the same thing to the other side:
7d - 14
So now it looks like:
5d + 20 = 7d - 14
Then, you have to get the variables on one side, so subtract 5d from both sides to get:
5d-5d+20=7d-5d-14
20=2d-14
Then, you still need to get the variable alone, so add the 14 to both sides to isolate the variable:
20+14 = 2d-14+14
34 = 2d
Then, since the 2d means 2 times d, you need to divide both sides by 2
34/2=2d/2
which equals:
17 = d
Just remember, you must completely isolate the variable by either adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing the numbers. AND be sure to always do the operation to BOTH sides.

You need to use the distributive property first.
Multiply 5 to d and 4
you'll get 5d+20
Multiply 7 to d-2
= 7d-14
now the equation will be
5d+20=7d-14
You only need d on one side, so I suggest subtracting 5d from both sides to get
20=2d-14
add 14 to both sides to get
34=2d
d=17

5(d+4) = 7(d-2)
5d + 20 = 7d - 14
5d - 7d = 14 - 20
-2d = -34
d = -34/-2
d = 17

5(d+4)=7(d-2)
5d+20=7d+(-14) 1st destribute
-20 -20 2nd subtract 20 from each side
5d=7d+(-34)
-7d -7d 3rd subtract 7d from each side
-2d= -34 4th divide by -2
d=17 answer

5d+20=7d-14
take out one sid of the "d"
5d-5d+20=7d-5d-14
20=2d-14+14
20+14=2d
34=2d
now divide
34divided by 2= 17
D=17 is your answer

ok. 5d +20= 7d - 14
5d+ 20-20= 7d - 14 -20
5d=7d-34
5d-7d= 7d-7d-34
-2d=-34
d=17 I DID ADD like terms. there u go!
