Levocetrizine( Hydrochloride)
it is a selective, long acting peripheral H1 receptor antagonist antihistamine. The increased polarity of Levocetrizine may decrease distribution of the drug into CNS, resulting in reduced potential for adverse CNS effects.Tolerance does not occur.As it does not readily cross the blood brain barrier,it does not cause sedation or interfere with memory alertness or memory function.
Indications:- Seasonal allergic Rhinitis,perennial allergic Rhinitis,ocular symptom( redness,lacrimation & itching),chronic idiopathic urticaria,urticaria dermographism, atopic eczema, contact dermatitis, also in acute allergic reactions due to drugs,FOOD,insect bites.
Dossage:-
Adults & children above 6yrs- 5mg single intake orally.
Children below 6yrs:- No adjusted dose.
Elderly persons:- Adjust dose on the basis of renal function.
Pregnancy:- Use with caution.
Lactating:- Secreted in breast milk.So use cautiously.
Contraindicatins:- In severe renal impairment.
Special caution:- Patients intending to drive/operate machinery/engage in potentially risky activities should not take overdose.Usage with alcohol/other CNS depressant may cause in reduction of alertness. To be used cautiously for children below 6 trs of age & pregnant women.
SIDE EFFECTS:- ALTHOUGH WELL TOLERATED SOME EFFECTS ARE HEADACHE, SOMNOLENCE,DRY MOUTH,MILD DROWSINESS & G.I. DISTURBANCES.
Drug interactions:- Rate of absorption is reduced with food,alcohol & CNS Deprssents may potentiate CNS side effects in sensitive patients.
