I was debating whether or not to name my son Jr. or the II, and was told that the proper order was: Sr., Jr., II, III, and so on. So being the by the book person that I am, I named him Jr. Is this correct? Thank you for your input....

If your husband has no Sr. or Jr. behind his name, then you are correct by naming him Jr. My husband is a Jr. and I would've had to name my son, II. You were told correctly.

Okay look at it like this.. Your husband was at one time just John Smith then when the son came along he became John Smith Sr. (Junior and Senior are used when there are only the first two). So now that he is the third dad would be John I your son John II and his son John III ( though your husband and son may remain Sr and Jr at their choice,)

Senior names his son Jr. If "Sr" has died without children or without sons, or the name skips a generation, then the next holder of that name is a II, II's or Jr's son would be III, etc.

So, if your name is John James, your son would be John James, Jr. His son would be John James III. If your brother names his son after you, then his son's name would be John James II, and than man's son would be John James III...

You would still have been fine using "II" after his name. I prefer that to Jr....

ex: great grandpa- John Sr
grandpa - John Jr or John II
dad- John III
son- John IV
