You're sitting fairly still, paying very close attention to something small that's right in front of you. Now picture your cat when she's stalking prey (real or imaginary). She sits very still and pays close attention to something right in front of her. Sound familiar? Even better, your "prey" has a tail and moves in small, jerky motions.
As far as cats opening doors, I have two that work as a team. One loves to play with plastic grocery bags, so we keep them in a bag in the pantry. She can't open the door, but her brother can, so he sticks his paw under the bifold door and pulls until it opens. She goes into the closet, and he walks away.

I think for things involving needles it's the quick movements of something shining. Just like how if you play with a laser pointer, or how they tend to chase bugs.
Or just to laugh at us. I heard a joke once that basically went...the difference between Dogs and Cats: You feed a dog, pet a dog, play with a dog, love a dog, take care of a dog...and the dog thinks you're God. You feed a cat, pet a cat, play with a cat, love a cat, take care of a cat...and the cat thinks IT'S God.
Cats are -very- clever. I used to have 14. They're always -watching-. Slightly creepy, non?

I've experience the same too. Ever cat I had loves watching me cook... from inside the mirco-wave!!!

They are studying us. They watch things that require the use of thumbs. Soon they will evolve their own and they won't need us anymore.
