If you charge too much on your debit card, does it work like a check, and the transaction is cancelled? Or do you end up with negative money in your account?

That all depends on how your bank account is setup.

My bank would deny that transaction unless the account has overdraft protection

Now let say a purchase is $10.00 the merchant authorize $20.00
You have $11.00 in the account. It will show an overdrawn account of $9.00. When it hard post. It will show $1.00 available.
Some banks do charge an overdraft when this happen, others don't.

its pretty much up to the bank. but if you made a purchase like at at restaurant for example, and it was $30, when you only had $20 and the card went thru, that means they will pay the rest...but that $30 dinner actually just cost you about $ 60, because of the fee the bank will charge you, its good to have a savings link to that checking, then they will just transfer whatever you are overdrafting from that account, and the fee for that is way less.

If your account is already negative, the transaction will be cancelled and the bank will charge you overdraft fees if you don't have overdraft protection. If your account is not overdrawn yet, the account will go negative and you will be charged for the overdraft fee.

hi. this really varies between banks.

i reside in australia. and it works like this.

for eg. ur meal was 80 and u onli had 60 in ur account. you would still be able to pay. however. ur statement would reflect a negative amount. as well as an overcharge fee. which ranges from banks. but should stay around 30-40.

so.. the thing u should do is really to check and limit ur spending (: cause i feel it's really not worth it to pay and extra fee because u didn check the amount u had in the bank. (:

hope this helped! (:

It is possible to overdraw your checking account when you use your debit card for a transaction that is greater than your available funds. You are responsible for knowing your balance prior to using your card.

You go into the negative and then once you're out of money you get charged around $30.00 each time you use your card. Even if the charge is only $2.00.

you end up with negative balance and then the bank charges you an outrageous fee

I believe the charge will be refused, as it makes instant connection to your checking account. But I'm not an expert.
