How did it come about that women have traditionally worn their hair long and men wear hair short?

It seems that in earlier days men did wear their hair longer but overtime they seem to prefer short hair.

Boys needed their hair out of their face when they went hunting and stuff and wern't really that clean because it's in a boys nature. No offense to them. And girls liked to braid it popular stile in mid1800's. ALso it's in a girls nature to be delicate and gracful.
