Be as sympathetic as you can, though try to minimize any pity you may show him, no matter how he acts when you tell him. Bottom line is, when you tell him, he won't like you, and there is absolutely nothing you can say at the moment to change that (but you can make it far worse) so tell him, give him a hug, say you're sorry and you want to continue to be friends, then give him some time. If the friendship is true then he will come back to you. If his pain is too great though, such is life, and he will need space between himself and you, to heal. There is no easy way out of this I'm afraid. Good luck~

Unless you have some personal attachment to your friend, that is, on an emotional level above friendship, you have no real obligation to him. If that's the case, just tell him and let the two duke it out for you. If you and him have some kind of connection like the one mentioned above, then be delicate and tell your FB that you're going to tell before you actually tell the guy that likes you.
