I hate to say, but a large portion of this answer depends on where you are from, and what kind of wine you like to drink. Up here in the NorthWest, we have a ton of good cheap wines to choose from. You can check out Rawson's Retreat wines which are from the Penfolds vineyard on Australia. They make mostly reds. Or go to any Trader Joe's or World Market for some great deals.

Marques de Cacqueres. It's about $10 a bottle, depending on where you buy it and it is absolutely fantastic. It's a red wine with a light flavor, has a red label, and it is from Spain. The type of wine that it is called is Rioja, which is one of the more popular dinner wines from Spain. When I was over there two years ago, all of the Spaniards that I was hanging out with really thought it was a good one, even though it is not the priciest wine there is. I love it. My absolute favorite. If you have a Cost Plus World Market in your area, you should be able to find it there.

Montelpulciano d'abruzzo is a red wine I almost always keep on hand. The grapes are usually grown in Tuscany, but famous for being used in Abruzzi. Montepulciano d'abruzzo has rich berry tones - think plumbs, black raspberries, peppery spicy tones and light to medium tannin. It is not an overbearing wine and easy drinking. It is easy going down, moderately acidic and very reasonably priced (generally under $12.00). I enjoy wines made from Syrah, from the Northern Rhone area too. Cote Rotie is wonderful as it has bit of Viogner (white grape, dry, fantastically aromatic and if you want a white option too, a Viognier is great with roasted veggies and vegetable soup), blended with the syrah. I think these wines are delicious and especially enjoy them during this time of year. Red Rhone Wines also seem to pair well with stews. (about $12.00-$18.00).

Well depending on what your budget is..if it's really small then Yellowtail is okay if you get the merlot or shiraz...For the price that is.

I like Wolf Blass Shiraz (from Australia), Castle Rock Pinot Noir (california i believe), Sebastiani Cabernet, If you've never had a Red Zinfandel (not the pink stuff) you should try one--a lot of people dont know about red zin...

I'm a red drinker also but I love White Haven Sauvingon Blanc for white (new zealand)

now to not be overly-obtrusive, yet that alcohol flavor in a good number of cases comes from alcohol ;D So once you're figuring out on a bottle of wine, look on the alcohol content. attempt to locate something at 12% or below (problematical to do with a purple wine, yet a number of the whites that others stated will fall into that classification). 13% is perhaps extra life like for a purple. that is common to locate new international wines with 14.5% for whites and reds above 16%. not purely does it up the possibilities of the wine tasting alcoholic, it makes them quite darn problematical to drink (honestly more effective than one glass).

Within the past year or so, Australian wines have hit the wine market, and they are surprisingly great tasting. You can purchase them, white, rose, or red in most super markets and the prices are reasonable.

Depending on your location... If you have a Tradere Joe's nearby - that is by far your best bet. They have great wine for cheap. My favorite is Charles Shaw or as locally known "2 Buck Chuck". It is always $1.99 and suprisingly good. Comes in several varieties, like Merlot and Chardonnay.
