I used "curmudgeon", but that means a grouchy, mean, jerk. Does not apply at all. Pessimist doesn't apply either. Just someone who will say "That won't work" (authoritatively), without thinking outside the box for a new solution, happy to simply point it out to you.

A reply may be considered an insult, or affront to the person doing the insulting.

Taking offense at disrespectful comments might work; or you take affront at the comments thrown at you.

Pointing out shortcomings of others is easy for those not recognizing they have shortcomings themselves. Perhaps carry a small mirror with you, and when the insult comes your way, hold up the mirror to the person, but don't say anything. See what happens.

They should get the message if they have any intelligence within.

Well, "pessimist" comes to mind as well as "wet blanket."

"Stick-in-the-mud,"although a "name" or "insult" isn't mean or vulgar.

I know a few people like this. I have other names for them! :)
