Yes, after a time of charging and re-charging, they wear down and have to be replaced. this is usually a three to five year time period. It is part of planned obsolescence.

I have never had them die even though they are the cheap NiCd batteries. I assume this is because a normal phone call is only for a few minutes and then the phone is recharged. After a period of time it may have dropped from 2 hours to 15 minutes capacity but you would not know with a 5 minute call. Now if all your calls are for a half hour maybe you would have to replace them.

yeah.. i had a friend who came to me to "troubleshoot" the phone and found the battery cant hold a charge for more than 10 seconds..

Yes, eventually they get where a charge doesn't last very long and then they just quit taking a charge.
