They confuse lust with love. Lust only lasts a year or two. Sex can still be awesome (VERY), but it's not the same chemical rush that you have in a new relationship.
Seems like most of the time someone says they "fell out of love", they fell into someone else's bed first.

it's probably that because they don't do things together as often or show each other that they still care for one another. you become so used to the idea that they are a part of your lives that you don't feel the need to show that you love them. eventually you being to resent the other person for getting you into a emotion less relationship when they could of had something special...when in truth they did but gave up

Little things occur to make (one of the people in the relationship) look to others outside of the relationship, they find someone else who excites them more than their current SO, and sure enough, they fall out of love.

Time.. with time comes growth.. with growth comes change.. human beings are not naturally monogamous.. and if love is superfically you are bound to fall out of it.. remember they orginally fell in love.. not rise in love..
