It could be anything -- a scratch that got infected, a bump with the furniture, or something pretty ominous.
How is the dog otherwise? Not as active, not hungry, running a temperature? If the dog is happy, active and eating, she might be OK with a wait and see attitude. Try cool compresses (or cool tea compresses) unless the dog objects.
If the dog does seem to be affected otherwise, take the dog to the vet. If SHE is still panicking, take the dog to the vet anyway. The weekend is coming up, and it's better to be safe than to have to pay emergency room vet bills.

Is the dog in pain? This happened to me, & I waited 24 hours & my dog was just fine. However, I placed a cold rag on her eye & gave it a little pressure. She was great the next morning. Then I did a follow up woth the vet & they said, "Oh you never know with dogs, it was probably just a minor irritation!" $35 late I was mad I even went!
But if the problem persists, yes, go to the vet!

put a warm wash cloth on eye, give her some benedryl and if this
doesn't help call your vetanarian. give the benedryl in children's
dosage for your dog. it might take at least a day for the benedryl
to work. have your friend check the eye to make sure theres no foreign object in the eye first.
