The older I get, the better I remember Army breakfasts tasting. My own attempts to duplicate this military classic don't even come close. (Note that I checked "community guidelines" and did not use the common three letter abbreviation.) Or is the recipe classified?

i use dried beef. I start by frying it in butter than add a couple tbs of flour cook that for a few minutes. Then add one can of evaporated milk and fill the can with 2% or whole milk which ever you have. Sauce will thicken as you cook it. Stirring often. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM over toast, english muffins, or biscuits. if you don't have flour you could use cornstarch just add it to water first.

My mom used to make it with a white sauce and what we called "chipped beef" (some kind of paper thin salty meat like the Buddig stuff, I think it was Hormel) that came in a glass jar with a metal lid. We used the glass jar as a juice glass after! Not sure if it's still sold.

Update: just found this...

I make a white sauce and stir chopped Buddig dried beef and serve over mashed potatoes or toast. My husband says it tastes like the Army food.

I'll bet you'll find the authentic recipe, because there are a lot of links with the history behind it, etc.
Just type out sh*t on a shingle (I actually spelled it out) in the Google search bar.
