we are thinking of getting our carpets dyed, only just found out that was possible. At the moment, they are a rose colour and we are thinking of a dark choc brown or a latte/coffee colour. Has anyone had it done, how did it turn out?

Professionally, I think that for the money, you should replace the carpet. Dyeing SOUNDS like a great idea until you get into it. But you won't be happy with the end product.

1. A good dye has to ABSORB into the fibers, which takes soaking the target material in the color solution. Dyeing a carpet in place is more like spray painting - shooting color at something and hoping it sticks. Uniformity of color, blotching, "color shadows", etc. are all very real (and nasty) problems with this. Unfortunately, they don't show up until everything dries which is a day or two after the contractor left with your check.

2. Most carpet down nowadays had a protective coating (Stain-Guard, etc) applied at the mill after it was woven. It is specifically designed to prevent spills from getting into the fabric (ever see the commercial about spilling red wine on a carpet?). Best you can hope for is a surface application which wil rub off on anything that touches it (your feet, your shoes, your pants, etc).

3. You still have to move all the furniture, whether you're dyeing or replacing. And you still have to be there with the workers.

4. And, if you search for the "deals", you can get some great deals on replacing your carpets.

So, lemme think... same money, same hassle and no choclate brown stains on the knees of my white pants because I knelt at the coffee table last night and beautiful new carpet for the re-sale value....

Hmmm....

Not a real dyeing idea, though assuming you want to get your
knees on the job, the other plan may work. There are really
nice kits to do wallpaper with paint sponge preshaped and
rollers preshaped combinations. Voila, el fresco. I did some
for a fussy fussy did I day a direct relation of the office of arts
Paris and they did come out fun! That may be what to expect
not precise though thorough and close enough. I did in about
5 hours after deciding the pattern, and getting the paints ready
lined up the tools, and dried for two days. The painting I did
was a mural style of an egyptian oasis. I got the pattern online
free, there are such sites to look at for ideas. I happen to do
the quantities by heart from other decorating work. A room
of 20 by 12 will be about 2 gallons of paint. The kit under 50
dollars. Type of paint must be studied also, conditions like
salt air, heavy moisture must be included.

We tried this when selling a condo a couple years ago because the carpet color was outdated and we wanted to modernize to sell at a higher price. We have bought a few homes that we renovated to sell and would never dye carpets ever again. The reason we (hubby and I) would not recommend this is that the color is not truly as steadfast as the company who does the coloring would like you to believe. Also - the age of the fibers in your carpet will still be the age they are and so the "life" will not be extended any - so you'll still have to replace it eventually.

If you are going to live in your home for a few more years - invest in new carpet or other new flooring instead. We did glueless laminate in the last place (easy enough to install ourselves = less expensive than paying for installation) and it gave us a higher appraisal and asking price when we sold the last place.

On that note we have Dupont laminate presently that fools friends and family because it looks like hardwood (even to touch) and we love it. Easy to install (glueless). And, it is holding up to pets better than hardwood.

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/WoodworkingProjects
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
