No. We need people who are proud to serve, not people that are forced to.

I support the draft even though I have sons. Our military is under stafffed, the threat from surrounding countries is mounting and we are not prepared. Our youth are getting in trouble and going to jail and our options are declining. I think that a military curriculum should exist in every middle and high school. ROTC is good but it is not enough. There should be an Army, Navy, Air Force And Marine presence in every American school to make the transition into the military, for the willing, an easy one. Better the Military than the gang.

I am. I feel that a citizenry that isn't willing to defend itself is doomed to eventual demise. The lack of participation in the armed services means that people don't understand either what the military is capable of or it's limitations, and so you have wars like Iraq. Admittedly you had wars like Vietnam when there was a draft, but that draft was unfairly applied.

More importantly, I always hear people talk about their rights. " I have the right to do this, the right to do that" True, but you also have repsonsibilities as a citizen, and not just paying taxes. People don't like to hear that, they want to take, but not give anything back.

Basically Debbi is saying that not only should military warfare be promoted even more than it already IS, it should also be mandatory for people to PARTICIPATE in warfare. Well lets hope we didnt just elect officials like this lady into congress...
There should NEVER be a draft. People WILL fight and DIE for what they believe in. However I am not interested in losing my only life in order to locate the Bush families former(or current)business partners(Bin Laden family). I am also not interested in losing my life for oil, or losing my life during the unjustified invasion of another country. Im also not interested in losing my life in response to the American congress' paranoia regarding nuclear development.
So am I for a military draft? Definetly not. Give people a chance to fight for what they actually believe in, and they will do it.

It appears that the volunteer armed forces is having a harder and harder time making quota. If for any reason, a need for a wide berth of troops does develop, a draft will become necessary, even for the short term, in order for the various branches to get up to speed, once again!

NO !! Today's (US) military works just fine with an all volunteer force. Also, the conflicts we find ourselves in are NOT man-power intensive.

For World War I, World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam we needed sheer numbers of BODIES... today we need intelligent, motivated soldiers, sailors, & Marines. Today we don't storm hills or defenses with waves of troops...

Also, a draft would steal valuable funds from the military... paying for soldiers who don't wish to be there.

NO and NO . If there was a draft would you be willing to see your children, spouse, grandkids, go first? They would have to put their lives on hold. Then they might never get the option to regain their lives back. I lived through Vietnam. No to drafts. Never again.

no. never. we have a much better army when it is volunteer. can't force someone to go, they are never as good a soldier. look at the quality of soldier today versus the quality of those 'who didn't want to be there' and you can't possibly think a draft is good for the military..

Yes! Let everyone share in our great democracy.......except no deferments this time! Anyone thats says someone drafted won't be as good a soldier needs to talk to someone from Viet Nam. They didn't want to be there, but when the bullets are flying you return fire or die!
