Shopping is better. Much better. Also the price of fuel, which you may not need since their public transportation ( vans ) is fantastic. You'll have to listen long and well enough to get the dialect, then you're home free. There are some areas you shouldn't go into after dark, but the same applies to any major city in the US, or any other country. The zoo is wonderful, the theatre fantastic (remember to pick up the dialect before you go) and the flamboyant trees lining royal park are flamboyant indeed.
Nothing will be as clean as you're used to. That includes meats and produce, which are often purchased in markets where the meat is cut up for you and sometimes slaughtered for you (mostly chickens). They do have "normal" grocery stores too, but the prices are higher and the quality lower.
Alcohol and cigarettes are less expensive, if you partake of either.
A large portion of the expats are located in Chagaramus in yachts. They'll usually have something going on.
Have a great tour!

Good for you. I'm from trinidad but i currently live in north america. i've been here for 2 yrs and i've been terribly homesick ever since. i hate this place. no offense. i luv trinidad. not just because i'm a trinidadian, but bc trinidad is truly a unique country with a unique culture. u'll see when u get there. POS is the capital of trini and i wouldn't recommend that u live there if u like peace and quiet. most of POS is very active and lively, but then again, that's Trinidad on the whole. Never a dull moment. We trinis luv to party, and i'm not talkin about the regular american party. when we trinis say party, we mean PARTY. i luv it. most ppl work in POS. but live else where, but even if u live in POS, it'll be fine. everyone is laid back and happy. just be careful, cuz there's still crime. u don't have to walk around with a helmet or anything, just be careful that's all. but trust me, onve u get used to POS trinidad, u'll luv it. especially around carnival time, and u'll be in the heart of everything so enjoy it.
the ppl are different from north americans also. we are a family in trinidad. everyone is family so don't find that strange. we actually help our ppl and we stand up for one another. we are straight forward ppl and not fake. that's one thing i hate about here. ppl are fake. when they smile it's not real. u'll see the difference when u ge there. we are warm ppl.
the only negative thing i can really tell u to look out for is crime. cuz despite our loving culture, we still have some stupid ppl who want to ruin the country. good luck!

Well Trinidad is just as up to date as the USA.However of course it's a different country all together, you won't miss out much as the clothes music TV shows , what ever we have here in the US they have it to.POS , It's the capital I've been in the country part and they were more up to date on stuff than I was. However Trinidad Rocks can not compare it to the US.the food culture so many races and the music and we love to have a good time.I'll take T&T anyday over USA.

Nothing is better, everything is worse. There is SOOO much crime, and kidnapping wealthy people is the new trend. Please investigate more. Look at US travel advisory and Trinidad newspaper. I am from the Caribbean, Barbados, and I would NOT go to TNT for nothing!

I have never lived in Port of Spain, but I have spent time there. It's a big (carribean) city, so you will find big city amenities busses, taxis, fast food, hotels, street vendors, groceries, shopping, bars, malls etc
