try and ask him a question or something on a topic you know he likes, or knows about. it will probably get the conversation up and going again but not always.

I just start asking random questions... try to think of what you want to know and go from there. Something is bound to start a conversation. And if that doesnt work try telling jokes or funny stories...

Two sure-fire subjects that are bound to either forge a bond between you or create a gap that can never be bridged: religion and politics. If you can survive those, you'll be free to talk about anything.
