I know the LDS church openly says they have something like 12 million members. If you're doing a paper or something (which it sounds like you are), you should search for a newspaper article that came out a while back. It said that there are offically 12 million members, but most of them are inactive or have left the church--the article estimated that there are around 4 million members instead.

As far as I know, in the last conference report I think we are right around 12 million members.
