I got a "dematting comb" at Petco and it works pretty well (it says it's for dogs, but a mat is a mat). What it does is separate the mat from the rest of the fur. If the mat is tight to the skin, you will have to tackle it a little at a time. My longhair Scottish Fold mats pretty easily, too. But his major problems are under his ears and behind his front legs. We trim his "nether regions" to reduce the possibility of "hangers" when he uses the litter box. Rather than brushing a cat, my vet recommended a metal dog comb. This will reach through the fur and get out the heavy undercoat that Maine Coon's have. With longhair cats, a little combing on a daily basis will help you avoid a major grooming job later. Give the cat a treat before you start grooming. Groom awhile and give him another treat, then let him go. You will need to do this in small sections because they tolerate this better. Be sure to give a treat when you're done so he will end his grooming session on a positive note. It may take several days before you're done. I also use a tool called "Furminator" on my cats. It rakes out the loose underfur better than any comb. My cat loves this thing. I give him a treat when we're done and tell him, "Okay, now you've been furminated."

Great choices for you here. I think the Maine Coons are very regal looking. My favorite names are Alexander(the Great) and Arthur (as in King Arthur). I just got a 14 yr old rescue kitty and named him Alexander. He is a big boy and sort of Turkish Van. I would name an orange cat Arthur.

I think Kiba would be an interesting name for your kitty. It means Fang. I'm out of creative thoughts right now.
